Construction fence rental for NYC job sites

Where §3307.7 requires a construction fence, it must be installed before work begins. General contractors use this to secure a job site on schedule. Owners and developers use it to secure a vacant lot, an active demolition, or a site awaiting a new build against trespass and liability, on the timeline the NYC Building Code sets.

Send us the site address and start date, and we’ll confirm what the job needs.

When NYC requires a construction fence

New York City’s Building Code doesn’t leave fence timing to the job schedule. Under §3307.7.6:

Fences required by this section shall be installed prior to the commencement of work. Such required fences shall not be removed until:

1. The site has been filled and graded and all hazards to the public removed; or 2. The facade has been enclosed, with all doors and windows installed, and all exterior work, except for incidental work, has been completed.

In practice, the required fence needs to be in place before work begins, and it stays up until the applicable removal condition is met. It stays up until the crew grades the site and clears it of hazards, or finishes enclosing the facade with exterior work done.

Section 3307.7 sets the fence itself. A construction fence has to stand at least 8 feet high, built solid for its full length from wood, corrugated metal, or another suitably rigid material. The fence has to be one uniform color: hunter green, metallic gray, or white, under the current rule.

Gates can sit in the street-facing section, built from the same material, sliding or swinging inward. Chain-link only stands in as a substitute with the Commissioner’s approval, and only on narrow, specific sites, such as one where work has stalled and a registered design professional has certified the site clear of hazards.

See NYC Building Code §3307.7 for the full requirement.

Work can’t start until the fence is up. Send us the site address and start date.

Temporary fencing solutions for the whole site

A construction site rarely needs just one kind of protection. Fencing holds the perimeter. A sidewalk shed covers the frontage where pedestrians pass below scaffolding. Scaffold bases often need their own enclosure. Jersey barriers hold the street edge where vehicles and the work zone meet. Most sites need two or three of these at once, not one.

We handle fencing, sidewalk sheds, pipe scaffolding, Jersey barriers, and the DOB filings required for the work. See Jersey barrier rental, sidewalk shed installation, pipe scaffolding, and DOB filing for how each part works on its own.

Need fencing, barriers and a shed on the same site? Tell us the whole scope, and we’ll quote each part.

Only once the crew fills and grades the site and removes all public hazards, or finishes enclosing the facade with doors and windows installed and exterior work complete. §3307.7.6 sets the conditions for removing the required fence.

Yes. We handle fencing, sidewalk sheds, pipe scaffolding, Jersey barriers, and the DOB filings required for the work on the same site.
